Education "is not acquired by listening to words, but in virtue of experiences in which the child acts on his environment."

Summer Camp Themes

Fun-filled activities to take advantage of the wonderful resources we have available in the Washington, D.C. area.

June 28th - July 2nd - Healthy Living - Human Body, Gymnastics and Yoga
The students will learn about the human body, and how they can take care of it with exercise. They will start the morning with Yoga, followed by an activity related to the different systems of the human body, and end the morning with gymnastics. The children will have an opportunity to practice what they have learnt on the "Fun Bus - Fitness Fun on Wheels" on Friday!

July 6th - July 9th - All Stars (Tuesday through Friday)
Studies have shown that children develop social skills that lead to the ability to work effectively as a member of a team in the first six years of their life. This camp will stress sports that require team-work such as soccer, kickball, capture the flag, and flag football. We will spend time on sports related skills such as balance, speed and agility.

July 12th - July 16th- Around the World - Japan and the art of Origami
In this camp, the children will learn about the culture and customs of Japan. They will make a passport, pack a suitcase and "fly" to Japan. They will travel to Mount Fuji, Matsushima, and the cities of Tokyo and Kyoto. They will learn about the art of Origami, and create a few origami pieces each day.

July 19th - July 23rd - Pick Your Star
Children will learn about the sun, moon, planets, comets, meteors and stars. Answers to questions such as "Why do we have Day and Night?" or "Where do the stars go during the day?" will be discussed this week.

July 26th - July 30th- Simple Machines
The students will do experiments that demonstrate the purpose of the 6 basic simple machines - inclined plane, pulley, wheel and axle, wedge, screw, and lever. They will learn that machines make work easier. They will also learn that machines do not have to be complex contraptions with many parts powered by electricity.

August 2nd - August 6th - Art and Famous Artists
Picasso, Monet, Matisse, Van Gogh - What do these names have in common? They are all famous for their art. Join us as we embark on an adventure where we will learn about these four artists. As we learn about these painters, we will become young artists as we try to use their techniques to create masterpieces of our own!

August 9th - August 13th - Dinosaurs
The children will go back to pre-historic times and learn about the different types of dinosaurs that roamed the earth. They will dig for fossils, make dinosaur footprints, and learn about paleontologists.

August 16th - August 20th - Wonders of Nature
Summer is the time when bugs are busy outdoors! Isn't it a perfect time to take a nature walk? Each child will make a bug from materials they find around the house and a little booklet about the "life cycle" of a ladybug.

Beautiful birds can also be seen outside in the summer. The children will learn about different birds seen in this area, and learn about the different sounds they make. They will make bird feeders and hang them outside to attract the birds.

In addition to bugs and birds, the children will learn about the different flowers grown in the summer and what plants need to grow.

The children will also go on a nature field trip to see what plants, insects and birds can be seen in the area.

August 23rd - August 27th - Nutrition and Cooking for Kids
Children will learn that food supplies the body with energy. Eating a balanced variety of foods is important for proper nutrition. Fun cooking projects will be introduced each day to reinforce the concept of making healthy choices.

We will end the week and the summer with a Field trip to a water park. The school will close at 3pm on Friday, August 27th. Parents will be asked to bring the children to a water park in the area at 4pm.
